Sultry actress, Monalisa Chinda explains her veering into publishing
Friday, November 22, 2013, was all about Nollywood star, Monalisa Chinda as she launched her much anticipated self-named magazine, Monalisa.
It was an evening of glitz, class and glamour as stars of entertainment lit up the terrace of the prestigious Intercontinental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, to support the beautiful actress. The magazine, co-owned by, Mr. Lanre Nzeribe after quite a long time in the works, was eventually launched to the relief and vindication of the screen goddess. Not many would have expected the magazine to have a staggering 336 pages, but that is exactly the number of pages of the maiden edition. The cover is elegantly graced by Monalisa herself. She talked about the challenges that stood in her way and much more.
Youíre a known talented actress who is doing well in Nollywood. Why are you going into publishing?
First, acting will always be part of me. As you attain a certain height in your chosen career, itís only natural that you want to diversify, you want to show the other things you can do. Not just to entertain but to impact knowledge. Thatís why I started this project.
What inspired this project?
First, God is my inspiration. I want to say Mrs. Betty Irabor. I knew when Genevieve started 10 years ago. I even featured in one of her early issues and Iíve watched it grow. I see a very strong woman, given the society we are from where women are only meant to be seen, not heard. She has done really well.
Sheís been on this for 10 years, sheís my mentor, I must confess. When I wanted to start this, I had to meet her for encouragement. It took six months talking to her and she mentoring me on what to do, how to go about it. I thank her so much and I want to give thanks to God.
What exactly is the magazine, Monalisa all about?
It is about love of the finer things of life. Itís about being unapologetic of success, applauding achievements whilst also mentoring ambition. It is about celebrating the fruit of labour and the result of hard work. Monalisa is about living, laughing and belonging.
This maiden edition contains about 336 pages. It will be published bi-monthly.
Who are the target audience?
I will say itís for the young, mobile men and women. From 25 to 60 from all walks of life. Itís open to all but itís not for teenagers though.
Before going ahead with this project did you consider the difficulties that come with magazine publication in Nigeria?
It didnít matter to me that all reports and research told me itís a mad idea. Apparently, around 60 percent of magazines launched, even in developed countries, fail within the first year. I was even told that the magazine industry in Nigeria was not buoyant enough to accommodate another magazine but like Albert Einstein said, ďOnly those who attempt the absurd can achieve the impossible.Ē
So, how does it feel having all these beautiful people around here today?
I feel humbled. I am totally blown away. I am speechless really and I am grateful.
Any word of encouragement for people with similar ambitions?
Never let anybody say you canít do this or you canít do that, keep pushing. People will always criticize you. I am a big critic of myself. Nobody should stop you from striving to be better. Thatís my message.
